About the Ministry of Muggles

Founded in September 2005 by dental students Julia and Sam, the Ministry of Muggles is Cardiff University's official Harry Potter society.

The society works hard to provide a wide array of socials for its members, both Harry Potter-themed and otherwise. We regularly have quiz nights and discussions, as well as cinema trip and big events such as our trip to the Goblet of Fire premiere in 2005. In December 2006, we hosted our first Yule Ball and were joined by several other societies. Of course, this doesn't happen by magic, and is all down to the committee, a group of students from all over the university who make this all possible.

The Committee

These are the people to keep an eye on look out for; the committee are responsible for making sure that everything runs smoothly. If you have any suggestions for the society, feel free to talk to the committee members at one of our socials. Don't be afraid! We don't bite much and we can be identified by our prefect badges.

President Name: Julia Pepper House: Ravenclaw Studying: Dentistry, Fourth Year Kernow bys vyken! Julia is a Ravenclaw and one of the founders of the society, not to mention a proud Cornishwoman. Without her and Sam, the society wouldn't be what it is today. In her spare time, Julia enjoys horseriding, archery and loves to sing. Perfect for keeping the society harmonious!

Secretary Name: Sam Kenealy House: Slytherin Studying: Dentistry, Fourth Year Senior Undersecretary to the Minister President. Trust us, Sam is nothing like Umbridge! There's a lot less pink and kittens for a start. A proud Slytherin and a founder of the society, Sam does a lot of the day-to-day running of the society with Julia.

Treasurer Name: Jon Mackrell House: Gryffindor Studying: English & History, Third Year About as far from a goblin as you can get, Jon is the society's treasurer and deals with official monetary things. Outside of HPSoc, Jon is also involved in the Film Society. He also enjoys cricket, rugby and Will Smith, not to mention damn good TV and the occasional beer.

IT Officer Name: Natasha Radford House: Ravenclaw Studying: English Literature, Third Year Internet geek and fandom junkie, Natasha puts the website together and does various other HP things online. In 'real life', she sings in a all-girls choir and plays in the wind band. She can never bring herself to pick a favourite book from the series, but DH might have to get that honour for the development of the female characters. She thinks Lavender Brown is horribly misunderstood and enjoys watching science fiction TV shows.

Ball Secretary Name: Lauren Moyle House: Hufflepuff Studying: Dentistry, Fourth Year Lauren lives in Cardiff with her fiancé (Ben), her dog (Jax) and her kittens (Lynx & Liono). She likes organising big parties with good food, lots of booze, and a great atmosphere: that's why she makes a good ball secretary! Outside of Potter-obsession, her hobbies include reading other fantasy/sci-fi novels, messing with her hair, shopping, Nintento Wii and planning her wedding!

Quizmaster Name: Emma Sandrey House: Gryffindor Studying: Journalism, Film & Media, Third Year Undoubtably far more interesting than a lecture from Professor Binns, watch out for Emma's quizzes! In the past Emma has done work for SnitchSeeker and is usually up-to-date with the lastest fandom news. Feel free to squee with her! Her favourite book is OotP, though her favourite moment has to be The Prince's Tale from DH. Her favourite characters are Ron, Snape, Luna, Tonks and Lupin. Emma's also a big fan of Doctor Who and Torchwood.

Prefect Name: Cat Griffiths House: Hufflepuff Studying: Biochemistry, Second Year As well as HPSoc, Cat is also involved with the SciFi Society; we can firmly say that there is no such thing as too geeky in this society.

Prefect Name: Sarah Burrow House: Slytherin Studying: Occupational Therapy, Second Year Given her degree subject, it's obvious that Sarah's very much a people person. She'll admit that Slytherin wasn't her first choice for a house, but now can't imagine being anywhere else.

Prefect Name: Hannah Harrison House: Hufflepuff Studying: Ancient History, Second Year When she's not reading HP, Hannah also enjoys Pratchett and Tolkein. She also loves Disney movies and cheesy 60s music.

Prefect Name: Kat Aldridge House: Slytherin Studying: Cardiff Alumni Not even graduating can keep Kat away. A former music student, Kat is a very proud Slytherin and not afraid to show it. She's also quite happy to rant about Doyle's score for the GoF film, is the comic book queen of the committee and always believed in Snape.
